I came to the realization after years of taking Minoxidil that it was not going to grow my hair back. I was maintaining alright, but I had started at such a point, I was basically a bald guy trying to maintain a few measly hairs.
I then started investigating hair transplants. I knew they would be costly, but I was only looking in to it. There are numerous websites out there. Bosley seemed to be the biggest. Most websites I checked lead to Bosley. They have offices everywhere.
To cover myself I started searching on the internet for problems with hair transplants. I did find a lot. There were a lot of problems with Bosley too. Many blogs show some gruesome pictures.
I also did many searches on prices. I found that the websites such as Bosley do not publish prices, they all want you in for a consultation. I can understand how there are different degrees of hair loss and there are differents costs. I was just concerned about getting the hard sell. Go for the consultation, get pitched. Leave and then the phone calls, letters in mail. I didn't need that.
A number of years ago I did go to Hair Club For Men. I was pitched for years after that. I just went in for the consultation, decided that I didn't want a wig on my head and that was it. I was basically harassed for years. The monthly phone calls finally stopped after I moved. That's what it took.
I didn't want to get in to another one of those situations. I thought I would be smart about this and avoid Bosley. They are the biggest, have the most phone banks to call me and they seemed to have a lot of complaints from web sites.
Searching on the internet I found a doctor in my area, South Florida. I will not mention his name. I called up and made an appointment. He is in Miami.
Arriving at the office, I was shown a video and pictures of previous customers. I had seen these same pictures online. They were good. Completely un noticeable work.
After reviewing the pictures, I met with an office manager and she explained pre procedure and post procedure processes. I figured, OK, here we go. They are going over this like I really am going to do this. I was there just to find out more about the procedure and costs.
Next the doctor came in. He seemed like a nice guy. He also explained that he had a hair transplant. It was awesome. I felt like asking him where he got his work done. I wanted that doctor! Although, as I went through his book with pictures, his work was just as good.
The doctor explained how I was advanced stage and he would need to check the donor areas of my head to see what he could do. He checked the sides and back of my head. After checking, the doctor explained that I really do not have the greatest donor area. My hair really wasn't too thick.
The best he could do was about 2,000 grafts which would only cover the front section of my head. The back of my head never really could be filled in. I do not have enough donor hair. He showed me a picture of someone in his book that had the same situation as me. The picture actually looked pretty good. He also stated that I could come back for a second operation in 9 mths where he could do a little more work. It wouldn't never fully cover my baldspot as I really did not have sufficient donor hair, but he could do a little more. The doctor further explained that if I was not happy with this, he recommended I start on Propecia which could help me maintain what I have better than Minoxidil and I should maybe look in to some type of wig or weave.
I was devastated. I always figured that I could get at least a transplant to cover most of my baldness.
I thanked the doctor and met with the office manager again. She came in and told me that they could do the job for $9,000.
I have aligned some of my before pictures on the right side of the page. This is what the doctor was looking at during my initial consultation. I snapped these pictures on the morning before my consultation.
